Furano: Hokkaido’s Newest Luxury Ski Destination for Travelers Who Seek Real Japanese Culture

Furano: Hokkaido’s Newest Luxury Ski Destination for Travelers Who Seek Real Japanese Culture

It’s never too early to start thinking about your next winter vacation. While Niseko dominates headlines as Hokkaido prefecture’s top ski destination, a quieter transformation is happening three hours northeast of Sapporo. Furano is emerging as a discerning alternative, combining world-class powder with something increasingly rare in luxury ski travel — authentic cultural experiences minus the crowds.

The Luxe Nomad, Asia-Pacific’s largest luxury vacation rental management company, reported a 62% increase in Furano winter bookings from 2024 to 2025, signaling a broader shift among affluent travelers looking for destinations that deliver both exclusivity and a genuine connection to place.

Stephanie Chai, founder and chief nomad of The Luxe Nomad, said, “People are choosing Furano for its Japanese mountain town atmosphere, endless backcountry terrain and the ability to experience Hokkaido as locals do — all without the premium price tag.”

Substance Over Status: Experiencing Traditional Japanese Culture

Furano’s appeal extends beyond powder quality. The town offers cultural authenticity, space to breathe and experiences that leave travelers with stories to tell. It prides itself as being the center of Hokkaido and embraces the nickname “heso,” or belly button, celebrated through its mascot Hesomaru (a farmer with a belly button for a nose) and a lively July festival where locals paint faces on their stomachs and dance.

This small-town charm is felt in its family-run farms and cozy izakaya, where menus remain in Japanese, reflecting a deep connection to Hokkaido’s agricultural roots. Don’t miss the region’s famed dairy — Hokkaido is the top producer of dairy in Japan — with everything from creamy soft serve and puddings to chocolates and delicate fromage cheesecakes.

World-Class Skiing Made More Accessible

Skiing in Furano isn’t only about Japow (Japanese powder). The town has coined the term bonchi powder (meaning basin, due to Furano’s central location) to describe its consistently dry, high-quality snow. It is also notably more affordable than its Powder Triangle counterparts. A day pass costs ¥7,500, compared to ¥10,500 in Niseko and ¥14,500 in Rusutsu. In 2025, Furano Ski Resort joined the Ikon Pass, a global multi-resort pass operated by Alterra Mountain Company, making it an even more attractive option for international skiers and snowboarders.

A family-friendly destination, Furano and Kitanomine zones feature dedicated beginner and kids’ areas with conveyor belts. Plus, children under 12 receive free lift passes and there’s even a short tubing run available at no cost. The Luxe Nomad’s properties are ideally located in the Kitanomine zone with Fenix Furano just 10 meters away from ski-in, ski-out access, Fenix West (pictured above) 190 meters away and Shiyuki Chalet only a 2-minute drive with complimentary transfers provided. Their location allows guests to maximize their time on the slopes with convenient access throughout the day.

Immersive Experiences Beyond the Slopes

Just a short drive from the Kitanomine zone, the Furano Cheese Factory lets visitors sample Hokkaido’s renowned dairy products or try hands-on experiences such as ice cream, butter or cheese making. Nearby, Chateau Furano offers winery tours with tastings of local and regional wines.

Within an hour, you can reach scenic spots including Biei’s Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls, which take on a striking beauty in winter. The area is also known for its iconic trees set against snowy landscapes, such as Mild Seven Hill and the Lone Christmas Tree.

For a seamless stay, The Luxe Nomad can assist with everything from ski rentals and lessons to activity and restaurant bookings. This ease, combined with Furano’s wider range of experiences, has led to longer stays — now averaging six to seven nights — as more guests use it as a base for exploring Hokkaido.

True Year-Round Destination

Beyond winter, Furano is a popular summer destination for locals and international travelers, with occupancy rising 42% year over year. This growth is driven by increasing interest in the region’s lavender fields, fruit picking experiences, farm-to-table dining and outdoor adventures, especially its well-marked cycling routes.

To meet this demand, The Luxe Nomad has introduced summer tour packages that allow guests to explore Furano more deeply — from visiting a range of flower fields to experiencing its local cuisine.

From booking to departure, The Luxe Nomad supports guests at every stage of their journey. Providing a home away from home and complimentary concierge services, guests can seamlessly enjoy a blend of adventure and luxury.
