Welcome Aboard the Luxurious Seven Seas Explorer!

Welcome Aboard the Luxurious Seven Seas Explorer!

On March 25, I toured one of the stately vessels of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seven Seas Explorer, while berthed at Tokyo International Cruise Terminal. It felt like a private invitation to experience one of the most luxurious vessels at sea.

As I arrived, the ship’s elegant silhouette strongly suggested a very refined day ahead. Media, travel agents, and other guests gathered at the reception for a two-hour guided tour that showcased the Seven Seas Explorer’s sumptuous suites, public spaces, entertainment, activities, and dining venues—climaxed by a very special luncheon.

Touring the Seven Seas Explorer suites

Every suite we stepped into was flooded with natural light, highlighting the ship’s neutral palette of ivory, soft taupe, and warm wood, punctuated with bursts of deep blue upholstery and contemporary art. The lounge felt like an upscale private members’ club at sea: comfortable yet formal, designed for conversation and panoramic views.

The suites on the Seven Seas Explorer are expansive, with sizes ranging from 27.5 to 472.7 square meters—some rivaling small apartments in size. They are thoughtfully zoned into living, dining, dressing, and sleeping areas, and all feature:

  • Spacious walk-in closets.
  • Relaxing Elite Slumber beds.
  • Private balconies (large enough for alfresco dining in top-tier suites).
  • Seamless technology, including discrete climate/lighting panels and tablets connecting guests to onboard services.

The lavishly designed Regent Suite is the pinnacle of luxury aboard. It boasts multiple full marble bathrooms with separate showers and tubs, as well as an in-suite spa with a sauna and jacuzzi. Throughout the accommodation options, materials and finishes are top-grade, utilizing Italian marble, artisanal wood veneers, plush carpets, and designer furnishings that feel residential rather than hotel-like.

Onboard amenities and entertainment

A recurring theme during the tour was privacy and personalization. Butler service is standard in select categories, and staff training aims to anticipate needs without being obtrusive—whether arranging a late-night tea service, coordinating shore excursions, or setting up an in-suite spa treatment.

The Seven Seas Explorer’s emphasis on space—both physical in the form of large suites and experiential through fewer passengers per staff member—creates an atmosphere of calm and exclusivity. Public amenities were equally impressive, featuring:

  • Well-appointed library with leather chairs and curated books.
  • Serene spa offering bespoke treatments using premium products.
  • Fitness center equipped with panoramic windows.
  • Pool deck serving as an oasis of refined leisure, complete with plush loungers, discreet cabanas, and a bar serving light plates and cocktails.

The tour concluded with a brief walkthrough of the intimate theater, where evenings feature everything from classical trio performances to contemporary acts. Staff emphasized cultural programming, including guest lecturers and destination-themed workshops. A major highlight was the onboard art collection, featuring pieces by Pablo Picasso and a vivid cobalt-blue glass ceiling installation in the elegant Compass Rose restaurant.

Fine dining onboard the cruise

Culinary experiences and fine dining

The Seven Seas Explorer takes pride in creating superb and exclusive dining experiences. From succulent lobster to the perfect burger and shake, there is an array of refined flavors from which to choose. The staff emphasized that menus rotate frequently, incorporating regional influences and fresh produce from ports of call.

Specialty dining highlights

  • Pacific Rim: Offering beautifully presented dishes from across Asia, this fusion restaurant serves sumptuously creative flavors in a refined, bold setting.
  • Chatreuse: A much-talked-about, theater-like setting where courses are plated with dramatic flair and silver domes are occasionally lifted tableside. The décor features velvet banquettes and brass accents, complementing a menu of classic French techniques reinterpreted with modern sensibilities.
  • Prime 7: With the understated elegance and charm of a high-end American steakhouse, guests can savor exquisite cuts of prime beef alongside iconic steak appetizers.
  • Private Dining Salon: An invite-only discreet lounge perfect for guests of the Regent Suite, featuring personalized menus and a dedicated service team.

The media luncheon

Our tour concluded with a media luncheon held in one of the signature dining rooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the Tokyo skyline, lending a cinematic backdrop to an already impressive table.

Course meal with premium ingredients and wine pairings

The tasting menu was a study in refined restraint. Each course was designed to highlight premium ingredients without overshadowing subtle techniques. Wine pairings selected by the sommelier leaned toward light, minerally whites and a few restrained reds that matched the delicate flavors perfectly. Throughout the meal, service was attentive but never intrusive as the staff readied for embarking passengers.

Leaving the Seven Seas Explorer that afternoon, the impression was of a ship that carefully orchestrates every detail to create a cohesive luxury experience: exceptional dining that honors both global and local flavors, suites that feel like private residences and public spaces designed for comfort and connection. The ship not only offered an exemplary display of Regent’s standards but also demonstrated how a cruise can be both a vessel and a refined destination in its own right.
