Hilton announced on May 1 the rebranding of the iconic Hotel Gajoen in Meguro, Tokyo, which will open as Gajoen Tokyo, LXR Hotels & Resorts in 2027. The hotel is set to resume operations in a “soft re-opening” for its rooms and restaurants in mid-2026, following a phased program of enhancements to its facilities and guest rooms.
The announcement marks the Tokyo debut of the brand, which has nearly 40 trading and pipeline properties globally. Owned by global investors Brookfield and managed by Hilton, the storied property will enter a new chapter that brings together nearly 100 years of history, extraordinary Japanese artistry and LXR’s deeply personalized approach to luxury hospitality.
Gajoen Tokyo will become the second LXR hotel in Japan following Roku Kyoto, LXR Hotels & Resorts, and the signing reflects Hilton’s growing luxury presence in Japan, with additional properties slated for Hiroshima and Hakone in 2028, as well as in Niseko, Hokkaido.
New era for Tokyo’s “museum hotel”
Long revered as a symbol of Tokyo culture and hospitality, Gajoen Tokyo is celebrated for interiors shaped by art, craftsmanship and design, carrying forward nearly 100 years of history and tradition. The property is also home to Hyakudan Kaidan, or the Hundred-Step Staircase, the only remaining wooden structure within the hotel and a Tangible Cultural Property designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. With its singular sense of place and deeply rooted identity, Gajoen Tokyo is a natural fit for the brand, where each property is defined by its own cultural resonance, intriguing design and highly personalized approach to luxury.

Location and luxury amenities at Gajoen Tokyo
Set in Meguro, one of Tokyo’s most atmospheric neighborhoods, the hotel is moments from Meguro Station and within easy reach of the city’s cultural and commercial districts. In spring, guests will be immersed in one of Tokyo’s most evocative seasonal spectacles, with approximately 800 cherry trees lining the nearby Meguro River.
Offering a unique blend of modern luxury and traditional Japanese aesthetics, the property will feature:
- 60 guest rooms modeled after traditional tea rooms.
- Spacious suites of more than 100 square meters, all equipped with a sauna and whirlpool bath.
- Five dining destinations.
- A luxury spa and fitness center.
- Approximately 5,700 square meters of meeting and event space.
Guests will continue to be welcomed through the historic Invitation Gate, setting the stage for a stay that celebrates the rich heritage of Japan, further enhanced by the hotel’s collection of around 2,500 pieces of Japanese art. The hotel is located just 250 meters from the lively Meguro area and a mere eight-minute train ride from JR Shinagawa Station, with Tokyo Haneda International Airport only 10 kilometers away. Fashionable shopping is a short distance away, ensuring guests can easily explore nearby attractions, including Tokyo Tower.
“Every element will be crafted to provide a harmonious escape, blending the beauty of tradition with the allure of modern hospitality. Whether you’re here for leisure or business, this boutique hotel stands as an exceptional base for experiencing all that Tokyo has to offer,” a Hilton spokesperson said.
